David Archuleta-The Music Man

Have you ever seen a person love music..not just enjoy it…or tap their toes to it…or appreciate it on some intellectual level…but LOVE it, the way David does? David Archuleta appears to have melodies and snippets of lyrics swirling in his head pretty much all the time. Sometimes these little musical nuggets pop out of David’s mouth much to every one’s delight. He punctuates conversations with bits and pieces of songs he has heard and never forgotten. It is amazing that he knows so many songs that were popular decades before his birth. And…he knows them in at least two languages. He takes Ben E King’s “Stand By Me” and Selena’s “Como La Flor” and makes them his own. He’s even been told he sings in his sleep!

From an early age it appears that David understood how music can tell human stories in such a deep and profound way. He began to understand the powerful possibilities music has to comfort, to encourage, to teach and to inspire us. We can feel our most vulnerable when we listen to music but we can also feel the most alive. He knows how music can influence our moods, our outlook and our behavior. Through his own experience he is aware that sometimes our deepest felt prayers happen through music.

In 1957 the musical play “The Music Man” opened on Broadway. It was also a popular movie released in 1962. Composer Meredith Wilson wrote a simple but beautiful song for the play entitled “Till There Was You”. I have located a video clip of four very young lads from Liverpool performing this song. Reading the lyrics I couldn’t help but think of David and how his sharing of his special gift of music affects us.

There were bells on the hill
But I never heard them ringing,
No, I never heard them at all
Till there was you.

There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No, I never saw them at all
Till there was you.

And there was music,
And there were wonderful roses,
They tell me,
In sweet fragrant meadows of dawn, and dew.

There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No, I never heard it at all
Till there was you!

David Archuleta didn’t invent music, but he awakens our senses and helps us to tap into the beauty and the power of music. Music is David’s gift to treasure and to share. Whatever your gift is, and yes we all have gifts, NOW is the time to share it.

It could just possibly be that “Till There Was You”, there was someone who didn’t know how to read… cook… swim… sew… drive… or love. Be like David Archuleta…..Share the gifts.
